North Devon Delight
The Durrant House Hotel
Like Barnstaple, nine miles to the east, the estuary town of Bideford formed an important link in the north Devon trade network, mainly due to its bridge, which straddles the River Torridge. First built in 1300, the bridge was reconstructed in stone in the following century, and subsequently reinforced and widened, hence the irregularity of its twenty-four arches, none of which have the same span. Bideford's greatest prosperity arose in the 17th and 18th centuries, when it enjoyed a flourishing trade with the New World, and today the tree-lined quay by the west riverbank is still the focal point for the knot of narrow shop-lined streets.
THE DURRANT HOUSE HOTEL The privately owned Durrant House Hotel provides guests with a very high standard of service, comfort, and cuisine. The spacious en-suite bedrooms have colour T.V, radio, direct dial phone, and tea / coffee making facilities. The hotel has two restaurants English / Italian and Indian Tandoori. Leisure facilities include a mini gym, sauna and solarium and outdoor swimming pool. The hotel is also equipped with wi-fi Internet. We have used this hotel on many occasions, and have always received a very favourable feedback. Entertainment.
We will of course make our usual comfort stops and visits en-route. Three full day and one half day excursions will be included on this lovely tour. Our first full day takes us into Cornwall to the beautiful old world charm of CLOVELLY (Admission included), and then on to the seaside resort of BUDE. Day 2 gives you the morning at leisure in Bideford, followed by an afternoon in nearby BARNSTAPLE. Day 3 sees us in the lovely twin towns of LYNTON & LYNMOUTH. Many of you will remember the Lynmouth flood disaster of August 1952. On day 4 we will visit the popular seaside resort of ILFRACOMBE.
