Coastal Kent and Canterbury

Coastal Kent & Canterbury

Walmer Castle

Welcome to Kent:

In the South-East corner of England. Kent is an amazingly beautiful area steeped in history and heritage, with interesting towns, pretty villages and picturesque countryside, and is renowned throughout the world as the Garden of England. We stay in the delightful seaside resort of Hythe, one of the five original Cinque Ports.

Mercure Hythe Imperial 4*

A ROOM WITH A VIEW

This majestic hotel is set in a 50-acre estate, in an enviable location on the peaceful Hythe seafront. The hotel embodies the elegance of a former age alongside modern amenities. As soon as you step into the mahogany-clad reception, you are assured of a warm welcome from the friendly and professional staff. All of the comfortable, en suite bedrooms enjoy sea, golf course or garden views. 'Spa Natural and Leisure' has a 15-metre heated indoor pool, a gym, and beauty treatment rooms amongst its facilities. Stroll in the well kept gardens, orchard and wild meadow area, or take a brisk walk along the seafront.

Included excursions:

1. WALMER CASTLE & GARDENS & DELIGHTFUL DEAL
We drive along the Kent Coast via Folkestone and Dover to visit Walmer Castle and Gardens. Built during the reign of King Henry VIII and perched on the picturesque Kent coastline, the castle was originally designed as part of a chain of coastal artillery defences, but later became the official residence of the Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports. The gardens are superb, especially the Queen Mother's Garden, which was designed to commemorate her 95th birthday. We continue to the delightful and fascinating port of Deal, where there is something for everyone. Many of the houses in the seafront conservation area have the remains of old tunnels and secret hiding places used by the smugglers.
2. CANTERBURY AND BROADSTAIRS
Today we travel inland to the birthplace of English Christianity; Canterbury, dominated by its famous and magnificent Cathedral is a joyous place to visit, and glows with an abundance of charm. Much of this can be attributed to its stunning position on the River Stour, whose quiet waterways flow through Canterbury, by-passing a wealth of gracious properties. It has an excellent array of shops, and during the summer months exudes a carnival type atmosphere. We then proceed to the small coastal resort of Broadstairs, with its delightful little harbour sheltered by a small pier. Once a haven for smugglers, it is now more well known for its connections to Charles Dickens. Bleak House, named for his novel, was once his home and is to the north side of the town; it was from here that he wrote David Copperfield.
