INCLUDED EXCURSIONS
1. HOLY ISLAND, ALNWICK & ROTHBURY
A reasonably early start today to take advantage of the tidal causeway crossing to the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, the fountainhead of England's Christian Heritage, with its 16th century castle, ancient priory, and a colony of grey seals. We then continue to Alnwick around lunchtime, where we will allow time for you to visit either the exciting contemporary Alnwick Garden, the magnificent Alnwick Castle, or simply to browse this lovely historic market town. Our final visit of today takes us for a short visit to Rothbury, another delightful town with the River Coquet meandering through the centre, and a good range of shops, pubs and tea rooms in the High Street.
2. BELSAY HALL & GARDENS, HEXHAM AND CORBRIDGE Today we travel first to Belsay Hall & Gardens, now one of Northumbria's top visitor attractions. Belsay Hall is an architectural masterpiece inspired by the temples of ancient Greece, with its fabulous 'Pillar Hall'. The extensive grounds are packed with an impressive array of shrubs and flowers, and the unique 11 acre Quarry Garden is a fantasy of ravines, pinnacles, and exotic plants. We then proceed to the bustling market town of Hexham, with its centrepiece being the historic Abbey, built around 675 AD at the direction of St. Wilfred. The pretty little town of Corbridge is our final visit of the day. A jewel in the crown of Northumberland, it grew from the Roman town of 'Corstopitum', a supply town for the troops on Hadrian's Wall. Its mediaeval street plan is much the same today as it was in the thirteenth century.
