1. STOURHEAD HOUSE & GARDEN
Secrets of the Hoare family history are revealed at Stourhead House, along with the unique Regency Library, fabulous collections of Chippendale furniture, and inspirational paintings. A short stroll from the house, lying in secluded privacy in the adjacent valley is one of the finest landscape gardens in the world, quite often referred to as 'Paradise'. Created in the 1740's by Henry Hoare II, the River Stour was dammed to form a great lake, around which Hoare laid out a landscape garden to welcome his guests with stunning views. As the garden developed, he added classical features such as the Temple of Flora, the Pantheon, the Temple of Apollo, and Gothic ruins to enhance the splendour. Henry Hoare II became known as 'Henry the Magnificent' such was the accomplishment of this wondrous garden.
2. GLORIOUS BATH
Bath is a city famous for its fascinating history, its beautiful Georgian architecture, and its Roman remains. The traveller James Boswell who visited the city in the 18th century said "Bath is the finest place on earth, for you may enjoy its society and its walks without effort or fatigue". He was right, for Bath is one of the easiest cities to explore, with a compact centre of broad main streets linked by narrow traffic free lanes. The streets are lined with beautiful historic buildings and pretty shops, and everything you may wish to see is within walking distance, making Bath a true people's city, and without a skyscraper in sight. For those who may have walking difficulties, there are a number of sightseeing buses running constantly all day.
